This video is the first of the consonant sounds. There are two sounds in this video, /s/ and /z/. To make the /s/ sound your lips are open, your teeth almost come together and you place the tip of your tongue on the ridge (the bump) up behind your top teeth – do not put the tip of your tongue onto the back of your teeth (your tongue needs to move back a little from your teeth, onto the ridge). The position of your tongue on the ridge partly stops the air and then you slowly leak (pass through) the air, past your tongue and out of your mouth. To make the /z/ sound your lips, teeth and tongue are in the same position. When you say the /z/ sound and put your hand on your neck (against your throat), you can feel the sound being made with your voice ‒ your voice is on. When you say the /s/ sound and put your hand on your neck (against your throat), you cannot feel the sound being made with your voice – your voice is off. We call this voiced (voice on) and voiceless (voice off).
