Audio Gear Deep Dives: The AudioScape VCOMP+

In this first Deep Dive, we’re exploring the vintage Gates Sta-Level compressor—predecessor to the LA-2A, 1176, and others—and the recreation by AudioScape, called the VCOMP+. The original Gates Sta-Level compressor was designed for broadcast installations—the goal was to create an effective, easy-to-operate compressor that could most be left unattended. It pioneered a brand-new type of compression that was much more musical and pleasing to the ears than previous designs, causing it to be adopted and loved by music producers and engineers. Eventually this popularity led to the compressor’s feedback gain reduction circuit being implemented in new designs from Bill Putnam’s LA-2A and 1176 compressors and other audio equipment. In this video we cover the history of the Sta-Level the technical details behind its musicality and rich tone and provide audio examples and general use instructions or advanced techniques for using the AudioScape VCOMP+ and other Sta-Level clones.
