Let's see The Town together. Oakland receives a reputation that I don't believe to be entirely true. What comes to mind when you think of The Town? A forgotten city by the Bay? San Francisco's little brother? Poverty? Crime? You can make a case for any of these to be true. Similarly, they can all be false. Let me tell you my perception. A forgotten city? NO. It's the city that started it all. In 1907, a 7.9 magnitude earthquake decimated San Francisco leaving the people without a home. Who took them in? Oakland. The asians starting building another Chinatown. The shipping industry was redirected fully to Oakland for the time being. Oakland became a new temporary home continuing to build the Bay Area culture and identity. It's not forgotten, it's to sole of SF that started nearly 120 years ago. Little brother? NO. Oakland is its own thing. People from Oakland have pride in who they were, are and will become. Get it right. Poverty. YES. Crime? Yes. Those ones are true in some areas. Maybe just don't hang out I West Oakland at 2am, you'll be just fine. In fact, you should be spending you time near Grand Lake Theatre and Lake Merritt. That where the fun stuff is anyways.
