Tunnel Mountain in Banff is a fantastic winter hike! It's a relatively easy trail, making it perfect for beginners or families. The trail is well-maintained and offers stunning views of the Bow Valley, the town of Banff, and surrounding peaks. It's also a great way to experience the beauty of Banff National Park in winter without the risks of avalanches or needing specialized equipment. Canadian Rockies Hike. January 17/2023 Winter Hike, Alberta Canada Today I am in the Town of Banff, and I will be summiting Tunnel Mountain. This is one of the most visited mountains in Banff National Park. The trail is 5 kilometers out and back, with an elevation gain of 277 meters. The Trailhead is in the Town of Banff. I started from the Lower Trailhead. There are two Trailheads, but the upper one is closed in the winter. This parking lot is very small, so get here early if you want to get a spot. The trail starts out going up a very steep hill, I think this is the steepest part of the hike. I highly recommend cleats and or poles if you plan to do this hike. Soon the trail levels off and the switchbacks will start. At .5k you will arrive at the upper parking lot. Get ready for a lot more switchbacks. As you gain elevation you will start to get views looking down at Banff and towards Sulfur Mountain. Just before .9k I encountered 3 deer on the trail. They were not at all bothered by people on the trail. I wanted to maintain my distance from them so I extended out my selfie stick and walked off the trail to get by them. It appeared to be a mother with two babies. Soon you will get your first view of the Banff Springs Hotel. As well you will start and get a great view looking west. As you get higher the switchbacks get longer and are more gradual. At 1.9k you will now start to get a view of Mount Rundle in front of you. Soon the trail switches back and you will start to get views looking east down the beautiful Bow Valley. There are quit a few lookout points here with railings, as it is a sheer drop. As well you will get a spectacular view of the side of Mount Rundle. As you make your way up the trail you will work your way left to the Red Chairs, which have a beautiful view of Banff. As you approach the summit the trail will take you back into the trees. At 2.5k I reached the summit with an elevation of 1690 meters (5500 Feet). It was a little windy here so I went to the other side of the mountain to have my lunch. I enjoyed a beautiful view looking east. I slowly made my way down enjoying the views in all directions. This was a great little hike. I was surprised how may people that were on the trail, as this was a Tuesday. I found the elevation gain, 277 meters, very easy as there were so many switchbacks. This hike is easier in the winter than in the summer. If you are in Banff or the Banff area and you want to do a little hike with big reward this hike is for you. This is my 97th video. Thank you very much for watching. If you enjoyed this video, please give it a thumbs up. If you would like to see my other hiking videos, subscribe to my channel, LIVE ON ALBERTA.
