Scrappy Quilt-as-you-go Charity Quilt

Let me show you how I made this scrappy charity quilt. I was given a large bag of batik scraps and end cuts. I decided to use my left-over flannel and batting to create a twin-sized donation quilt for a local women's shelter. I've never made a string block, but the scraps were the perfect size to work with. I assembled the blocks in a Quilt-As-You-Go technique. After adding some batiks from my stash, I was able to connect them with sashing and top stitching. The multiple layers of fabric and batting required a sturdier needle and a walking foot. As the quilt grew, I used both pins and clips to keep things lined up. The result was worth the extra effort. Lessons Learned: 1. The amount of dust and lint was amazing, so I found I needed to clean my machine more often than usual. 2. Make sure there is fabric for the sashing: one side 1 1/8 inch wide, the other is 1 3/4 inches, which is then pressed in half.
