When people are truly desperate for help, they start asking everyone they can. Tonight I experienced what Christian Busch, in his book The Serendipity Mindset, calls a “serendipity bomb.” It’s like throwing a Hail Mary — reaching out to as many people as possible in the hope that someone might be able to help. A mother I hadn’t spoken to in five years called me because her son is struggling with serious learning challenges. She remembered that I had once tutored her daughter, and she’s now reaching out to everyone she knows to see if someone can point her in the right direction. As a parent, I understand that instinct a lot more now. When your child needs help, you exhaust every possibility. I don’t know yet if I’ll be able to help. But sometimes serendipity starts when someone is simply willing to ask.
