Have you tried shopping for train stuff on WalMart.com? https://walmrt.us/3REew0e (affiliate link) In September of 2023 I took a two hour ride of to North East, Pennsylvania, just outside Erie, to vidit the Lake Shore Railway Museum. Lake Shore Railway Museum 31 Wall Street North East, PA 16428 https://lakeshorerailway.com/ As I drove into the parking area of the Lake Shore Railway Historical Society Museum, I could feel the weight of history all around me. Founded back in 1956, this hidden gem in Erie County, Pennsylvania, is a living testament to the glory days of railroading. The journey began at the former New York Central Railroad passenger depot, now lovingly transformed into a haven for locomotive enthusiasts like myself. Run entirely by dedicated volunteers, the museum is a labor of love, preserving the memories and stories of northwestern Pennsylvania, western New York, and northeastern Ohio. Inside, the halls echoed with the whispers of a bygone era. The Board of Directors, a group of passionate individuals, meets here monthly, guiding the museum's mission to preserve, enjoy, and share the rich history of railroading. Every corner revealed a new treasure—a General Electric rail product here, a Heisler Locomotive Works masterpiece there, and the elegant craftsmanship of Pullman Standard Car Company creations. Each artifact seemed to have a tale to tell, a piece of a larger narrative woven into the fabric of American rail history. The museum sits on 2.5 acres of historic land, a revitalizing force in North East Borough. Trains Magazine even cited it as a safe space for enthusiasts to witness the grandeur of railroad operations, a fact that became evident as I watched trains pass by from the museum grounds. But it wasn't just about the locomotives and rolling stock. Inside, I found myself immersed in a treasure trove of artifacts, equipment, and memorabilia—all meticulously maintained by the LSRHS. Here, history wasn't just a thing of the past; it was alive, vibrant, and waiting to be explored. Weekends until the end of October are when the museum opens its doors to the public, inviting all to step into this world of wonder. And even in the quiet of winter, the grounds remain open, a silent ode to the enduring legacy of the rails. I left the LSRHS Museum with a sense of awe and wonder, my mind full of the sights and sounds of a time long gone. The whistle blows of the past seemed to linger in the air, reminding me of the incredible journey through railroad history I had just experienced. If you have a love for locomotives and a passion for history, this hidden gem awaits, ready to transport you on a journey through time.
