Once upon a time, there lived a beautiful girl who was kind to everyone, worked very hard, and ought to have had a wonderful life. But she didn't. She was often abused and treated very cruelly. Life was unfair to her. She longed to escape such a sad situation, so she often daydreamed of becoming a princess. With her beautiful voice, she would sing the words: "A dream is a wish your heart makes When you're fast asleep In dreams you will lose your heartaches Whatever you wish for, you keep Have faith in your dreams and someday Your rainbow will come smiling through No matter how your heart is grieving If you keep on believing The dream that you wish will come true" ("A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes" by Mack David, Al Hoffman and Jerry Livingston for the Walt Disney film Cinderella (1950)) Good news! Out of nowhere a fairy godmother appeared, turned some mice into horses that gave her a ride in a pumpkin carriage to a castle where a prince fell in love with her at first sight, obsessed over her selection of footwear, and then... wait for it... they lived happily ever after! Who doesn't love a good fairytale! Meanwhile, somewhere else there was another beautiful girl who also worked hard, fell deeply in love, and had dreams of her own. With her beautiful voice, she would sing: "there was a time when men were kind When their voices were soft And their words inviting There was a time when love was blind And the world was a song And the song was exciting There was a time Then it all went wrong" Fantine, "I Dreamed a Dream" (Les Misérables) Bad News! She loses her job because she is a single mother, is forced into brutality, prostitution, and subjected to extortion to pay for her only daughter (who is treated as a slave) and then dies an early death as she is about to be unfairly hauled off to prison. I certainly like the fairly tale better. But man, sometimes I feel like life has killed the dream I dreamed! How about you?
