WE HOSTED AN AMAZING STUDENT FROM LATVIA |Hosting foreign exchange student, future leaders of Latvia

The Wandering Firefighter and family were able to host a Latvian foreign exchange student for a short time! Our foreign exchange student, Alise, is an amazing person! She and her fellow foreign exchange classmates are undoubtedly some of the future leaders of Latvia! Hosting a foreign exchange student is a great way to learn about another culture, country, and the people who live there. Although there are obvious differences, we are all pretty much the same :) Being a host family in American can open your eyes in many ways! The Latvian students are World Link exchange students and part of the Future Leaders Exchange Program (FLEX) and the American Leaders Exchange Program (ALEX). These exchange students in America enjoyed some time in Washington, DC and then made their way to Des Moines, Iowa and its surrounding communities. Exploring and experiencing American culture was on the list, but the exchange students also did a whole lot of volunteering during their visit to the US. They took in Living History Farms and Gray's Lake as well. After visiting the schools in Carlisle, Iowa, the students were also able to participate in the Carlisle Wildcats Wildcat Games! As far as what Alise experienced individually with her host family, she learned about the sport of softball, went shopping, visited the Des Moines Downtown Farmers' Market, ate at Fuzzy's tacos, and took a miniature trip to "Europe" by experiencing the Pella Tulip Festival during Pella Tulip Time. Our family LOVED hosting Alise and we are confident a bond has been formed that will last a lifetime :) This Latvia USA connection is real!
