Suspended solids are a component of biofloc and hybrid aquaculture systems and can be comprised of detritus, uneaten feed, feces, microbes, protists, etc. that provide both an alternative food source for the cultured animal as well as some nitrification or ammonification depending on the bacterial populations present. It should be noted that solids composition can and will change over time and is dependent on several cultural factors. It is important to monitor solids in the water column to better manage water quality, biological oxygen demand and prevent gill clogging in the cultured species.
