The meniscus implant is a "bio-scaffold" on which the body can rebuild a damaged meniscus using its own cells. The film presents ACTIFT implantation technique for chronic injury of the medial meniscus. The most typical indication for such surgery is knee pain and impaired function following partial meniscectomy. It may also be used when a torn meniscus cannot be repaired by sewing; for instance, due to the complex pattern of the tear or when the injury took place many years earlier. Dr. Konrad Słynarski has been performing such surgeries since 2007 (as a result, he can boast the largest number of meniscal implantation procedures worldwide). Meniscus implantations are performed concurrently with other knee procedures (cruciate and collateral ligament reconstructions, articular cartilage repair treatments or femoral or tibial osteotomies). It is a very simple and effective method, which makes it possible to achieve pain relief and restore knee function, as well as resume sports activity. If left untreated, meniscus injuries may lead to serious complications and permanent loss of knee stability. That is why it is vitally important to start treatment as early as possible. The best solution in the event of severe meniscus rupture is to sew it back together. If it is impossible, however, or if the meniscus has already been removed, there remains an option of meniscus transplantation using donor tissue (when the injury involves the entire meniscus). In the majority of cases, though, only a partial meniscal resection is performed -- and then the best solution is to put in a meniscus implant (as we can still repair what is left of the meniscus instead of replacing it). The procedure is much less invasive and better tolerated by patients. Sports activity can be resumed within several months.
