West Bengal is an Indian state, located in Eastern India on the Bay of Bengal. With over 91 million inhabitants (as of 2011), it is India's fourth-most populous state. It has an area of 88,752 km2. 2. A hotbed of the Indian independence movement through the early 20th century, Bengal was divided during India's independence in 1947 along religious lines into two separate entities: West Bengal, a state of India, and East Bengal, a province of Pakistan which later became independent Bangladesh. Between 1977 and 2011 the state was administered by the world's longest elected Communist government. 3. Kolkata, also known as Calcutta, the official name until 2001, is the capital of the Indian state of West Bengal. Kolkata was once the capital of India. During the British Era, Kolkata was the capital of India before the construction of Delhi capital. 4. Kolkata Is The Only City In India To Have A Tram Network. Operating since 1902, the Kolkata tram is one of its kind in India and the oldest running electric tram system in Asia. The tram adds a certain charm pertaining to a bygone era to this city. 5. Howrah Junction (station code HWH), also known as Howrah Station, is the largest railway complex in India and it is a railway station which serves Kolkata and Howrah, India. Approximately 617 passenger trains pass through the station each day requiring its 23 platforms and serving more than two million passengers per day with a high train handling capacity. Howrah Junction is one of five intercity railway stations serving the city of Kolkata. 6. Mary Teresa Bojaxhiu, commonly called Mother Teresa, and known in the Roman Catholic Church as Saint Teresa of Calcutta, was an Albanian-Indian Roman Catholic nun and missionary. She was born in Skopje, then part of the Kosovo Vilayet of the Ottoman Empire. After living in Macedonia for eighteen years she moved to Ireland and then to India, where she lived for most of her life. 7. The great banyan tree draws more visitors to the garden than its collection of exotic plants from five continents. Its main trunk became diseased after it was struck by two cyclones, so in 1925 the main trunk of the tree was amputated to keep the remainder healthy; this has left it as a clonal colony, rather than a single tree.
