Dedicated to the memory of Larry Moudy, 1946-2025. Composed between 1860 and 1862, the Prelude, Fugue et Variation Opus 18 was published in 1868 as no. 3 of the Six Pièces pour Grand Orgue. Cesar Franck later transcribed the work for two pianos, and for harmonium and piano. He performed the harmonium version with pianist Vincent d’Indy in 1874. The piece has a very balanced ABA structure. The Prelude introduces a haunting, melancholy theme. A short, powerful bridge section launches the Fugue. The Variation brings a serene, reflective return of the original theme with a more active accompaniment. I've been able to find (online) the scores for the solo piano transcriptions by Jorg Demus (1992) and Otto Mortensen (1936). Both Ignaz Friedman and Alfred Cortot transcribed the piece for solo piano as well. The Harold Bauer transcription (1910) appears to be the version most frequently performed today. I first heard it several years ago on a CD by pianist Awadagin Pratt. I immediately fell in love with the piece and was inspired to learn it.
