The Destiny of Project Management: Reimagining PM in an AI-Driven World A veteran practitioner, consultant, and professor reflects on nearly 30 years of observing project management from inside industry and as an outsider, arguing that despite a growing toolkit, standards, certifications, and demand for project managers, project failure rates have remained around 70% for two decades and global project success scores hover near 36%. The presentation outlines why PM is often perceived as an immature, peripheral discipline and makes the case to reimagine it to improve outcomes, elevate careers, and remain relevant amid AI—citing a claim that by 2030, 80% of PM tasks could be done by AI. Joseph highlights limitations in current PM, including poorly understood soft factors, lack of feedback loops, and broader workplace issues like low engagement and burnout that influence projects. He proposes a “dimensionality reduction” approach using a RESULT framework (Resolve, Environment, Signature, YOU/motivation, Learning, Team) to score and weight key factors, noting that different groups tend to rate projects similarly and that early AI experiments with a neural net showed promise in predicting schedule performance from RESULT scores. Three future trajectories are presented: a preferred path where humans remain at the helm using data-driven models and tighter feedback loops, a scenario where agentic AI takes over planning/execution/monitoring with humans assisting, and a near-term “do nothing” continuation. The talk closes with an opinionated timeline suggesting inertia will dominate first, agentic AI adoption may follow, and eventually PM may evolve into a higher-level, data-science-adjacent “work solutionist” role that advises leaders on organizational changes to improve project outcomes. 00:46 Inside and Outside PM 02:40 Three Quotes Framework 04:06 Agenda and Ground Rules 05:38 PM History and Growth 06:33 The Scorecard Problem 09:22 Why Reimagine PM 10:58 Limits of Current PM 12:39 Workplace Forces and Engagement 16:08 Stepping Out to Gain Control 18:59 The RESULT Six Factors 22:08 AI Prediction Experiment 24:28 Future Trajectories for PM 27:50 Tech Trends and Agentic AI 30:18 When These Futures Arrive 33:29 Closing Thoughts 🔗 Learn more from the Project Management Center for Excellence: https://pm.umd.edu 🔗 Register for the next Project Management Symposium and earn PDUs: https://pmsymposium.umd.edu
