The Takujōsha was an 8 person collective of 20th century Japanese artists who captured the rapid change of Shōwa era (specifically the 1920's and 1930's) Japan using an evolution of Ukiyo-e known as sōsaku hanga or "creative print" in English. They referenced the legendary Ukiyo-e master, Utagawa Hiroshige's 100 Famous Views of Edo and created a 20th century version of the masterpiece, blending modern scenes with familiar Japanese ones. The Takujōsha saw the Tokyo they knew and loved disappearing before their eyes and wanted to capture this moment in Japanese history in the most Japanese way they could think of, woodblock printing. This video is for anyone who has experienced change and didn't know how to feel about it. I hope I can provide you an experience which gives you a sense of gratitude and appreciation for the beautiful and important work of these 8 Japanese artists who's names have been largely forgotten to history.
