Ragnar Kjartansson says about The Visitors, “You can concentrate on the solo performance, or you can concentrate on the whole thing.” This video draws inspiration from that idea. Here, nine synchronized thumbnail videos showcase the musicians’ solo performances, while the centerpiece captures the whole thing – a curated musical journey that celebrates their artistry and skill. Individual soundtracks draw you into the performers’ space, echoing the original museum installation. Have you ever wondered where the musicians were in the Rokeby Mansion, or how drummer Þorvaldur made that winding journey upstairs through the sleeping lady’s bedroom and down again to meet pianist Davíð in the parlor? You’ll find the answers in the credits (50:10 – 54:05). The Visitors has been ranked #1 on The Guardian’s list of the 25 best artworks of the 21st century. While this video pays tribute to the installation, it can’t replace experiencing it live. If you ever get the chance, go. Dive into the nuances of the solo performances, immerse in the emotional sweep of the whole thing, and chart your own curated musical journey. As Kjartansson says: “It’s really about spatial experience.” ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Highlights: 00:00 Opening 09:09 Ooh-ooh & Davíð Solo #1 (11:21) 22:38 Tremolo & Gyða Solo (24:43) 36:46 Once Again & Davíð Solo #2 (38:50) 50:13 Credits: The Cast, Song and Lyrics, Technical Team, The Setting & Closing Quick things to know: • Recorded at San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) • Adheres to museum guidelines • Not for commercialization or monetization • Please credit this work when you share it • The SFMOMA exhibition runs through September 28, 2025 Key references: • Google Arts & Culture: Story (https://artsandculture.google.com/sto...) • Washington Post: Oral History (https://www.washingtonpost.com/arts-e...) • The Guardian: The Best Art of the 21st Century (https://www.theguardian.com/artanddes...)
