A humanitarian refers to a person who seeks to promote human welfare. Humanitarian action refers to an effort tailored to help people that are living in very bad conditions. Presently, there are millions of people worldwide suffering due to war, floods, earthquakes, and other disasters. This emphasises the need for humanitarians. True humanitarians do not focus on the self; they focus on impacting the lives of others positively. In this presentation, Esther Oreofeoluwa Esho (Doctoral Student, Department of Philosophy of Law, Moral and Politics, University of Valencia) promotes humanitarian action through story-telling. In this paper, Esther presents a Nigerian folktale titled 'Six Very Good Friends and their Skills - The Rabbit, Tortoise, Hare, Parrot, Nightingale and the Eagle'. This folktale explores several skills in the humanitarian arena, and how it can be used to help a particular village gain peace, stability, and decrease human suffering. Esther reflects on this story, and examines how it depicts the possibilities of humanitarian work. Esther has been involved in humanitarians work across Africa and Europe. WIth this presentation, she aims to show how humanitarian work can be elevated through story-telling and poetry.
