The Redi Cube was first released in about 2017 by MoYu, it is quite a simple puzzle as the 8 corners twist and move the 3 edges with them, this allows the edges to move all around the puzzle but the corners will remain in place, they just might be twisted. The concept received some initial interest but largely died down, however, MoYu has now massively improved their original design and released it with modern features such as magnets and a ball core. I am not entirely sure what drove them to do this as there are many other things they could be working on that people would care about more, however, I suspect it has a lot to do with Chinese cubing schools, the concepts you learn from understanding how pieces on the Redi Cube move could help with more complicated puzzles such as the 3x3.
