Start with a pen holder, a simple handle that has a slot at one end to insert the nib. There are a variety of nibs you can use -- from fine to broad and everywhere in between. (0:30) Insert the nib firmly into the pen base. Dip the pen into the inkwell, making sure only the tip of the nib (about a quarter inch or so) is covered with ink. (0:37) When writing, place the nib end flat against the paper, and pull the pen towards you for a smooth line. Pushing the pen away from you creates too much resistance, and will result in splatter. For best results, hold the pen at a 45 degree angle. (0:55) Inks come in a variety of colors fit for any occasion. (1:04) Calligraphy pens with felt tips are a great way for beginners to start practicing. They are quicker and easier to use and can be more forgiving that nib and ink.
