A comparison video of each of the 4 main groups of Yuehai Cantonese: Guanbao, Xiangshan, Sanyi, and Guangfu (according to the Language Atlas of China). Note, this is just one from each group. There are many more subdialects within these dialects of Yuehai or Guangzhou Cantonese (the prestige dialect of all the Yue Languages). Map of Dialects: https://qph.fs.quoracdn.net/main-qimg... Disclaimer: other Yue languages like Taishanese are not part of the Yuehai family group. They are part of their own distinct language group within the Yue Language family tree. That is why people that speak only Standard Cantonese (like Hong Kong and Guangzhou Cantonese) do not understand people that speak Taishanese. 0:00-1:56 • Video This is Weitou Dialect (圍頭話). It is part of the Guanbao family group. This dialect used to be spoken from Dongguan all the way to Hong Kong until Guangzhou Cantonese speakers replaced them in Hong Kong and Mandarin speakers in Shenzhen. 1:57-4:00 • Video What the maid is speaking is Shiqi Dialect (石岐話). It is part of the Xiangshan family group. Shiqi Dialect used to be the prestige dialect of the Cantonese dialects from Zhongshan to Macau until Hong Kong/Guangzhou Cantonese eclipsed all other Cantonese groups as the prestigious form. 4:01-7:43 • Video This clip shows contestants trying to guess a couple of words in Shunde Dialect (顺德話), a branch of the Sanyi Dialects or Foshan (佛山) dialects. This dialect and other dialects around Foshan are similar to the main Guangzhou Cantonese dialect. 7:44-8:54 • 新會三江九子沙蜑家話 岡州天地 This video shows Tanka people (蜑家) speaking their dialect. Tanka people are a subset of Cantonese people that use to live on boats. Their dialect is in the same family group as Guangzhou Dialect, the Guangfu family group (廣府話). That's why their dialect seems to be the most similar to the standard Cantonese dialect.
