In Kampala’s neighborhoods of Nateete, With support from UNFPA-ActionAid International Uganda is building on the success of past intergenerational dialogues to stop harmful practices like Female Genital Mutilation and child marriage among refugee communities in Urban centers. In 2024, the organization conducted intergenerational dialogues, bringing together religious leaders, young people, and women to talk openly. These talks helped challenge old beliefs, like thinking it’s okay to marry off young girls or harm women, which hurt their rights and health. These heartfelt talks, supported by religious and cultural leaders, have already started changing how people think, with men and young boys joining women and girls to speak out against traditions that harm women’s rights and health. In Nateete, the discussions have shown that when communities come together, they are challenging old beliefs, like accepting FGM as normal, and instead promote respect and equality. To make a bigger impact, ActionAi set up FGM surveillance teams and strengthening youth groups to inspire their peers to reject harmful practices in Nanette, Somali community. These efforts focus on giving communities the power to design and lead campaigns against child marriage and other violations of women’s and girls’ rights. Creating safe space for discussion, Samuel Ononge, Project Officer, encouraged everyone, especially respected community leaders, to stand up against these practices and support equality for women and girls. The dialogues are sparking change—traditional and religious leaders are starting to promise to fight these harmful practices. With the Nateete Somali community leadership in collaboration with ActionAid’s efforts, there’s hope for a future where refugee women and girls can live safely and freely.
