A family of dolphins was spotted on Saturday, 10th January 2026, in the River Lee at Pope’s Quay, Cork. From early morning until late afternoon, this pod of at least seven common dolphins, including a baby dolphin (calf), was seen swimming, jumping, and exploring the river. These are common dolphins, a highly social and fast-swimming species known for their playful behavior. Dolphins are incredibly intelligent marine mammals that use echolocation to navigate and hunt for fish. This pod likely came upriver following schools of fish, making their appearance in the heart of Cork city a rare and exciting sight for locals and visitors alike. The following day, the pod was also visible from Mardyke Bridge, continuing to enjoy the tidal currents of the river. Seeing dolphins this close in an urban environment is a reminder of the incredible wildlife that shares our waterways. A truly unforgettable encounter with nature right in the middle of the city!
