After weeks of heavy cloud cover throughout November and December, Friday 12 December 2025 finally brought a glimpse of the sun here in Finland. Satellite data showed strong and promising solar activity, raising hopes for a proper aurora display later that night. But as darkness fell, the clouds returned — once again threatening to ruin the show. After a moment of frustration (and some serious cloud-cursing), I decided to try anyway and drove about 30 minutes to Marttila. Behind the clouds, it was clear something special was happening. Green auroras covered nearly half the sky, glowing through the cloud layers. The constantly moving clouds made it difficult to see distinct shapes, often hiding the lights just as they started to intensify. Still, there were a few clearer moments — just enough to capture some genuine aurora action.
