Ragtime Aperitif Recital by Michael Maxwell Steer at the Savile Club, July 2023 Tom Turpin (c.1871-1922). Born in Savannah, Georgia, Turpin opened a saloon in St. Louis, Missouri named The Rosebud where he entertained on a raised piano which he played standing up – sometimes just with one hand while dispensing drinks with the other! This arrangement suited him because he was so stout that he couldn’t sit at a piano! The Rosebud became a hangout for local pianists such as Louis Chauvin who collectively evolved the embryonic ragtime form. Turpin’s Harlem Rag (©1892, ℗1897) written a year before Ragtime took off at the World Fair is considered the first true ragtime composition, but Joplin pipped him to the publishing post. With his brother Charles, Tom Turpin went on to build an empire that included a theatre, gambling houses, dance halls and ‘sporting houses’. He served as a deputy constable and became one of the first politically powerful African-Americans in St. Louis. Series curated and filmed by Michael Maxwell Steer
