Control Systems Under Pressure - Dan Noyes | SANS ICS Security Summit 2022

Cybersecurity researchers at Idaho National Laboratory (INL) spend thousands of hours each year focused on identifying defensive measures for industrial control systems and operational technology. This focus has allowed INL to develop extensive capabilities to assist government and commercial cyber defenders of critical infrastructure. This presentation will give an overview of some of these capabilities along with two demonstrations of how INL uses these capabilities to build process control systems and train industry professionals on cybersecurity practices. One demonstration includes the “Little Arc Flash” platform, which represents a layout for an electric generation and transmission network, coupled with a model representing the final distribution substation to power a residential neighborhood and shows the potential effects of a specific cyberattack against this network. The other demonstration shows potential effects of a cyberattack against a gas/oil separator platform that includes two product tanks, a PLC, an HMI, and multiple accompanying pumps and valves that operate the representative gas/oil separation process.
