A briefing on progress in developing safer alternatives to PFAS chemicals in firefighting foam. PFAS (per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances) are a class of nearly 5000 chemicals used to make products grease- or water-proof and have been used for decades in firefighting foams. PFAS are sometimes called “forever chemicals” since they do not easily break down in the environment and some forms will be with us forever. PFAS have been linked to serious health problems such as cancer, hormone disruption, immune suppression, and reproductive problems. Nearly every state has at least one area that has been polluted with PFAS, with some states experiencing more than 50 contaminated sites. Scientists from around the world are calling on governments to eliminate the entire class of PFAS where possible due to the significant human health and environmental impacts. Speakers: --Liz Hitchcock, Director, Safer Chemicals Healthy Families --U.S. Representative Madeleine Dean --Erika Schreder, Science Director, Toxic-Free Future --Niall Ramsden, ENRg Consultants LASTFIRE Project Coordinator --Randy Krause, Fire Chief, Port of Seattle Fire Department, SeaTac International Airport --Shari Franjevic, GreenScreen Program Manager, Clean Production Action
