I am Der Geher and I am walking through Eidelstedt on the north-western edge of Hamburg. This time I start at the renaturation of the Mühlenau in the Feldmark. Towards the west, the houses become denser and a small center is reached after the B4. Between Elbgaustraße and Jaarsmoor, many apartment buildings are passed on small paths. The path then ends at Elbgaustraße station. First mentioned in 1347, there are two ideas about the origin of the name Eidelstedt. It could be a Saxon settlement (Stedt) around a settler called Eyler or it could come from Ilenstätten, a place for collecting leeches. In any case, the village developed around a mill from the 14th century, which was repeatedly sold and modernized. It was not until 1943 that phosphorus bombs destroyed the buildings and the mill caught fire. The tower was finally demolished in 2004. Today, around 36,000 inhabitants live in the district.
