(16 Dec 2004) 1. Wide view of President George W. Bush and Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi in Oval Office 2. SOUNDBITE (English) George W. Bush, US President: "Silvio, it is great to welcome you back to our country. I think it is fitting that one of the first world leaders to visit after the elections is my friend, Silvio Berlusconi. He is a close personal friend, he is a friend of the United States of America and I told the Prime Minister I look forward to working with him in the next four years to make the world a better place for all and I've got work to do in Europe. He gave me some very good advice about my upcoming trip, but he always gives me good advice." 3. Mid view two men shaking hands 4. Cutaway reporters 5. SOUNDBITE (English) George W. Bush, US President: "The policy of my government is a strong dollar policy. We believe that the markets should make the decision about the relationship between the dollar and the euro. Therefore, to the extent that the Federal Government is involved with making the conditions such that a strong dollar will emerge, we will do everything we can in the upcoming legislative session to send a signal to the markets that we will deal with our deficits, which hopefully will cause people to want to buy dollars." 6. Cutaway Berlusconi listening 7. SOUNDBITE (English) George W. Bush, US President: "We have made it very clear to the countries in the neighbourhood, including the two you mentioned, that we expect there to be help in establishing a society in which people are able to elect their leaders. And that we expect people to work with the Iraqi interim government to enforce borders, to stop the flow of people and money that aim to help these terrorists. We have made that very clear and will continue to make it clear." 8. SOUNDBITE (Italian, with English translation) Silvio Berlusconi, Italian Prime Minister: "We agree on the fact that we have to continue to fight the war on terror together and we agreed on the fact that it is now the appropriate time to solve Middle East issues." 9. Pull back from reporters to Bush and Berlusconi STORYLINE: US President George W. Bush pledged on Wednesday to work with Congress to reduce the US' huge deficits, to assure markets that his administration supports a strong dollar. His comments, made during an Oval Office meeting with Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, came a day after the it was reported that the trade deficit hit a monthly record 55.5 billion (b) US dollars in October (2004). Berlusconi raised the dollar issue with Bush, and expressed the concern of many Europeans. Europeans have been particularly hard-hit by the dollar's decline because most of the adjustment has occurred against their currencies, including the euro and the British pound. Bush, during a photo opportunity in the Oval Office, also expressed confidence about resolving bitter differences between Israel and the Palestinians. Berlusconi said the two leaders had agreed that it was an appropriate time to solve the Middle East issues.
