Using image sequences as materials is a rather common practice when working as a motion designer or visual effects artist. The implementation is mostly a one dialog process: Loading the image sequence. Mark that it is animated. That´s it. Now you can drag it onto your object and press play. In unreal engine though, this is a multi-step process where you have to set up 5 assets and link them all manually and set up a sequencer. Even with version 5.1's media plate asset you still can not just assign an image sequence media source onto an object or it´s material channel. What a hassle... But all this is about to change.
