Premiered at The Old Hairdresser's, Glasgow, 12/02/2026 00:00 - montrose 05:50 - stornoway 12:30 - morven Salim Gun Faclan (Psalms without Words) is a work based on Gàidhlig psalm singing. Throughout the movements, original hymns of the tradition are processed through indeterminate variations to evoke the free heterophony of the congregation when they sing. Personally, this work has served as a way for me to connect with this aspect of my culture which is primarily kept within the church and mostly conned to the Outer Hebrides. Growing up speaking Gàidhlig and also being an atheist, I was always aware of this psalmody but much to my disappointment, never able to understand or be part of it. Composed by Flynn Butler Peformed by composer with Stillpoint: Bebhinn Todd (Soprano Saxophone), Emily Gow (Flute), Hazel Sharp (Tenor Saxophone), and Hannah Swinney (Cello) Stillpoint Ensemble is an unconventional quartet of musicians from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. We bring together flute, saxophone, cello, piano, and percussion in unexpected ways, performing a mix of original arrangements and inventive takes on classical and contemporary pieces. We focus on music that feels honest and alive—curious about what it can become in our hands, and how it can speak beyond us.
