After the Metra unit didn't work out and the FL-9's were delayed the LIRR used two GP-38's to pull the C-1 bi-level coaches. Usually the 259 &266 were used but the 251 & 269 were able to substitute. The couplers were changed on the engines and Alco FA powerpack #608 was cut up and transformed into #3100 seen on the west end of this train. This car (3100) supplied the HEP power for the coaches. Train seen here is #660 from Hunterpoint Avenue to Port Jefferson. This was the only trainset the LIRR had of these coaches. I believe the westbound trip was as train #603 an early AM run. Once the FL-9's were put into use, the GP-38's were returned back into regular service. Note that the "LONG ISLAND" isn't on the side of these engines yet. They look like they are freshly painted. Video taken August 25, 1991 at Smithtown, NY.
