We believe that more great minds need to focus on preserving the good things in the world, not just on profit. We also realize that we live in a capitalist society and money makes the world go ‘round -- whether we like it or not. Our goal at Preservation Capital is to enable people to make a positive impact on society and the environment, without sacrificing economic prosperity. Individuals who innovate on behalf of the planet should be rewarded. In 2012, new legislation enacted here in California enabled us to form Preservation Capital as a benefit corporation. This allows us to focus on cultural and environmental preservation, and lets us issue stock to align interests with people who are working towards those objectives. Ownership in the company gives employees financial incentive as well as the responsibility and power to achieve unprecedented outcomes. Preservation Capital allows foundations to maximize the impact of their assets under management and focus on their core goals. Utilizing treasury regulations that have been newly modified to promote innovation and sustainability, we are the intermediary that bridges the gap between finance and philanthropy. By using PRI’s in an innovative way, we can deploy money at below-market rates, so organizations fighting to preserve precious cultural and environmental resources benefit from a lower cost of capital. Pooling both human and financial capital enables Preservation Capital and the foundations it represents to benefit from unprecedented economies of scale. So what’s a PRI? PRI’s are Program-Related Investments, and they allow foundations to make loans or investments that qualify towards their legally mandated 5% annual donation requirement. There are three basic rules to qualify as a PRI: 1 - Profit cannot be the primary driver. 2 - The loan or investment must support the foundation’s main objective. 3 - This loan or investment must not be used to influence legislation or take part in political campaigns. PRI’s are not yet widely used, due to the complexity and cost involved in their execution, but used properly, they hold incredible potential for foundations looking to maximize their impact.
