2 Weeks of Epic Vanlife in Cederberg Mountains: Hiking, MTB, Exploring Caves and Epic Views! | Film

We hit the road making our way deep into the Cederberg mountains. The Cederberg is a vast area in south Africa consisting of large rugged mountains , rocky landscapes, ancient rock art , little streams, waterfalls, hiking and mountain biking. We soon left the tar roads with about 20km of gravel ahead of us. We slowly started scaling the mountains Leaving all civilization behind. Exploring Cederberg has always been on our bucket list but we never thought we’d be here in our 2 wheel drive vans. These roads become very remote often you won’t see other cars for hours. Luckily we had safety in numbers, spare wheels and 20l of backup fuel thanks to awesome road trip , more to come on that. One of our favorite parts of #vanlife are the drives in between destinations. We love watching as the landscapes change , South Africa is extremely diverse. The #cederberg region is largely guarded by cape nature. Cape nature provides accommodation options while conserving and protecting the natural environments around. We decided to tackle the rock jumper mountain biking trail. We soon felt that these trails were rarely used as they were very over grown. These would make a better hiking trail. But never the less we had a laugh and enjoyed the views. Since we have these epic electric bikes from Titan we decided to enjoy the last bit of light as we attempted our second trail. This one was a much more enjoyable ride and the mountain views with the sun going down was a great evening. This is one of our favorite parts of vanlife. When we have spare time we get to explore new backyards with different hiking trails and scenes along the way. This is a 5km in and out hike as you slowly scale the mountain towards a waterfall and viewpoint. Our last morning at Algeria camp we admired our surroundings as the change of season was so prominent with orange leaves falling off the trees with the cold winter temperatures. We started the day slow as we drank coffee , ate breakfast and caught up on a little bit of work in between. Since we were driving that day we decided to stretch our bodies with some acro yoga before hitting the road. If the Cederberg wasn’t already on your bucket list these scenic drives should change your mind. After a 30 km drive and many view point stops along the way , we made it to our campsite , Krom rivier Cederberg park. We checked in at reception and found our private campsites along the river with our own personal amenities. We enjoy exploring our surroundings either by foot or bicycles , this way we are immersed in the nature around us , taking in the views and fresh air. Being on the move there is always something new to see. We find it vital to get outdoors as it always improves our mood , lowers stress and makes you in touch with your surroundings. Since the winter in Cederberg get so cold we found ourselves to be the only people bracing the weather conditions. The winter has its perks , with quiet campsite and autumn colours still present. We had bright yellow and orange coloured trees all around us. We arrived at Stadsaal caves which offered a lot more then we expected! We were blown away by the bright orange rock formations, and the countless caves to explore. This is a special part of South Africa’s history , These caves have formed over thousands of years due to wind erosion and other weather conditions. These caves have some of the best preserved san bushman rock art in the Cederberg region. A walking path takes you around these incredible overhangs and jutting rock formations , a leisurely stroll could take 30 minutes however we found ourselves in awe and spent about 3 hours exploring. We set up camp alongside the river with our friends from Awesome road trip. Here’s a sneak peak into our tiny home on wheels. With around 5 trails to choose from starting at this camp we decided to head out on the 8km loop before the sun set. It’s always a good idea to get outside for sunrise or set as the landscapes illuminate different colours. After some Rocky conditions and unexpected erosion we arrived at camp to sit around the fire and watch all the stars appear. A while later we had zig zagged up towards the top where we found ourselves at the base of the cliff that guards the summit. Here the route divides , the narrow crack is the recommended way up as it involves a fun climb and some obstacles. The wide crack is a more straight forward scramble up. We opted for the narrow cracks, we found ourselves squeezing through gaps and climbing large boulders, luckily there were some ropes to help. The orange rocks were glowing all around us. Once you are through the cracks it’s about 5km to the wolfberg arch, luckily it’s mainly flat along the summit. We spent the entire day on the mountain and hiked a total 27km that day. This is a hike we would recommend to everyone! #travelsouthafrica #vanlifesouthafrica #southafrica #camping #
