Little remained of the gymnasium where the more than 1,000 hostages were held during the 62-hour ordeal. The gym's roof was destroyed, windows shattered, the walls pocked with holes. The basketball hoop, which some victims said had been strung with explosives during the siege, was little more than a skeleton. Blood was spattered on walls and pipes in the spot where, witnesses said, the hostage-takers executed the men they had captured. Russian President Vladimir Putin went on national television Saturday to tell the country that they must mobilise against terrorism, and he promised wide-ranging reforms to toughen security forces and purge corruption. In a rare and candid admission, Putin said Russia "showed weakness" in the face of an "all-out war" by terrorists. Chechen separatists are suspected in a string of attacks in Russia that have killed some 450 people in the past two weeks. Two planes crashed nearly simultaneously on August 24, killing 90 people, and a suicide bomber killed eight people in Moscow on Tuesday.
