The Antipodes - what does this mean? Australia and New Zealand are sometimes referred to as the antipodes. The term antipodes in this sense means the opposite side of the Earth - the furthest away it is possible to be while still on the surface of the Earth. However as illustrated in these images, Australia isn't actually 'the antipodes' to any land. It is antipodal to the North Atlantic Ocean. New Zealand, is antipodal to Spain, Portugal, Gibraltar and the tip of Morocco.
