Since then, he claims, she and her daughter have endured one setback after another in attempting to return to the United States, which has included being arrested no fewer than four times – in South Africa, Turkey, and the Netherlands – and having to sleep rough. Dennis readily admits to being scammed, but claims that the scammer is not "Kimberly," but rather "corrupt government officials," who have drained him of $211,000. To raise this amount of money, Dennis has forfeited his motorcycle, gone into credit card debt, borrowed significant funds from friends, and even taken money from his mother.
