Bric-A-Brac is a miniature that's magnificently humanist. A compressed story says a lot about the old, redevelopment, and the state of the globalized world. After more than a hundred years of development, Hong Kong has transformed from a small fishing port into today's international metropolis, bearing the efforts of two generations. However, prosperity does not mean everyone in society can benefit from it, and it is not inevitable that the elderly can have fundamental human rights. According to the World Health Organization, around 1 in 6 elders experienced some form of abuse. Only 1 out of 24 cases of elder abuse was reported. Currently, 1 in every 8 Hongkongers is aged 65 or above. It is predicted by the United Nations that, by 2050, Hong Kong will become the city with the highest ageing population globally, and 40% of the population aged 65 or above. Is there still time for Hong Kong to develop into an "age-friendly" city? Be a voice. Bric-A-Brac Synopsis| Bric-A-Brac is a miniature road movie set in an old community in Hong Kong. "Community" is a peculiar word; it doesn't carry the same warmth as "family," but for some, like the characters in the story who do not have an ideal family, on this night, they "have" each other. Siu (signifies "smile" in Cantonese ), in her seventies, once again endures cruel and unreasonable threats and abuse from her son at home. Having endured it all her life, she determined to push the old sofa that should have been discarded long ago out of her home and walk alone to the garbage dump. At the corner of the street at midnight, Siu runs into her old neighbor, Tong, whom she has known for over thirty years. Throughout the night, the two of them make stops and push the worn-out and heavy sofa, walking through the quiet old streets, parks, overpass bottoms... They encounter different people, objects, and lonely scenery along the way. With lighting, scenes, sound, and editing, the audience is immersed in the sweltering night sky, walking through the old community in Hong Kong alongside the two main characters. This journey reveals issues with families and the tangled bonds by blood. On the road, both of them have changed, yet both of them have not changed. Unfurls as gradually and unthreateningly as the sky lights up during dawn; we feel fatigued and concerned. Between old age and death, there is still a segment of life.
