What Are The Stages of Book Illustrations | Children's Book Illustrations

Character sketch, thumbnail sketch, rough sketch, pencil sketch, line art, rough color, and final art—there are so many pieces that go into illustrating a book, Before you begin picture book illustrations, it is important to understand how to illustrate a children's book. The Illustration Process When illustrating a children's book, all illustrators work differently. Some illustrators go straight from a rough sketch to a piece of final art. Others follow a longer illustration process, with more stages involved including character sketch, thumbnail sketch, rough sketch, line art (or pencil art), rough colors, and final art. When hiring an illustrator, ask how many stages of art are included (and how many revisions your contract allows at each stage. Need more tips on hiring an illustrator? All of this informs what kind of work the illustrator has to do, and ultimately impacts the illustration cost of a book. But what, exactly, do these art terms mean? We can't break all of this down today, maybe in another video I will walk through the entire process of illustrating a children's book using one my own as an example.
