Harshad Mayekar, a Post-doctoral fellow at Ahmedabad University, conducted a session as part of the workshop" The Grand Challenges: Insect Decline, Causes, and Consequences," a national-level seminar for college students held on November 28 and 29, 2024. His session highlighted the issue of decreasing biodiversity due to numerous causes. Using fossil records like insects in amber and water bugs, he illustrated insect evolution over vast timescales. He discussed the relationship between genome size and diversification: larger genomes generally correlate with survival benefits and fitness, but they don't always lead to higher species diversification. Conversely, smaller genomes sometimes correlate with increased diversification (though not universally).
