Baku is a remarkably pleasant, walkable city with streets and plazas filled with outdoor cafes and a miles-long promenade along its Caspian Sea waterfront that connects the city's main shopping and entertainment district with a downtown crammed with architecturally distinctive commercial high rises. The latter is owing to Azerbaijan's unique position among former republics of the Soviet Union as a nation of oil and gas riches, including the most natural gas reserves of any nation on Earth.
