Not knowing just how serious the hazards were, firefighters poured in to try to fight the blaze from the destroyed reactor number 4. Several firefighters received lethal amounts of radiation that night and were transported to the Pripyat hospital as well as several plant workers who also received serious levels of radiation exposure. The clothes of those fighting the fire had been drenched in radioactive particles and were quickly removed and brought down to the basement where they remain at to this day, still very much dangerously radioactive. Exclusion Zone authorities had previously attempted to keep people away from the radiation hazard by filling the basement stairway with sand however there are several other ways in utilizing makeshift ladders. While short term exposure to this hazard is little to no risk, I still made sure to cover my shoes with plastic bags to avoid the possibility of contaminating my shoes and risk potential problems when exiting the 20KM checkpoint.
