"The drovers learn the hard way what life must have been like for their counterparts of two or three centuries ago - every day was a hard Highland cocktail of danger, cold and hunger." Luke Casey reports on an extraordinarily ambitious attempt to recreate a centuries old Highland Cattle drive. Author John Keay, his wife Julia and some friends are intent on leading a herd of Highland cows along a traditional droving route between the Isle of Skye and the former market town of Crieff, over 200 miles away. On the course of their journey they'll face countless obstacles - some, like crossing lochalsh, would have been familiar to the drovers of old - others, like electric fences and a visit from the animal welfare officer, are decidedly 20th century. They'll also encounter some of the most ruggedly beautiful landscapes in the world. Clips taken from three editions of Nationwide, originally broadcast on BBC One, 7 October, 19 October and 11 November, 1981.
