🌍 Welcome to «aliīs vōcibus» — “with other voices” — a series exploring lesser-known and often misunderstood languages. This time, we’re traveling to the northwestern edge of Europe — to Britain before English, before Anglo-Saxon rule, before Germanic languages reshaped the island. Welsh, Cornish, and Breton are often treated as regional curiosities or romantic survivals. But they are something far more significant. They are the last living voices of Ancient Britain — Brittonic (Brythonic) Celtic languages that once connected the Isle of Britain to a vast Celtic chain stretching across Europe, from Gaul to Iberia, the Alps and beyond. Welsh survived as a continuous community language and remains a modern national language today. Cornish tells one of Europe’s most remarkable stories of linguistic recovery, reconstructed from historical sources and spoken again by new generations. Breton, carried from Britain to Armorica in the early Middle Ages, survives in France despite centuries of political suppression. Together, these languages reveal what Britain sounded like before English — not as echoes or relics, but as living voices with their own rhythms, structures, and histories. They remind us that languages don’t simply disappear: they are pushed aside, rebuilt, or fought for — and sometimes, against the odds, they endure. ✨ Feel free to share your thoughts, experiences, or perspectives in the comments.
