Fixing an oil leak from the oil filter bypass valve (inside the oil filter housing bracket) BMW 318iS 1998 E36 M44 This is fixing an oil leak from the oil filter bypass valve between the block and the oil filter housing. There seems to be a shortage of videos that show this part of the motor, and my workshop manual doesn't even mention it. Main steps are: Remove air cleaner & inlet Loosen accessory drive belt & move clear Remove idler pulley Unbolt steering oil reservoir and move aside Disconnect battery Remove alternator Remove belt tensioner pulley (left hand thread) Remove steering pump pulley Remove belt tensioner assembly Unbolt steering pump and move aside Remove alternator mounting bracket (5 bolts) Disconnect oil pressure switch Remove oil filter housing bracket (6 bolts) Lift out oil filter bypass valve Install new O rings on oil filter bypass valve Refit bypass valve Refit oil filter housing bracket (with new gasket) Reinstallation is the exact reverse order. None of these bolts have specified torques in my manual, however similar bolts elsewhere on the motor are 7 lb ft (M6 bolts) and 16-18 lb ft (M8 bolts). While the alternator's off it is convenient and quick to check the brushes (see separate video)
