Lower-limb amputation is one of the most severe and debilitating consequences of Diabetes Mellitus. This seminar explores the epidemiology of lower-limb amputation in New Zealand, as well as some novel clinical interventions aimed at reducing amputation incidence – including a spectacularly unsuccessful trial Dr Gurney ran for his PhD. Dr Jason Gurney is a Senior Research Fellow and epidemiologist in the Department of Public Health, University of Otago, Wellington. He is the Deputy Director of the Cancer and Chronic Conditions (C3) Research Group, and has an enduring interest in the prevention of foot ulceration and lower-limb amputation among patients with diabetes.
