In 1966, The Rolling Stones recorded Paint It Black on just four tracks of tape at RCA Studios in Hollywood. Nearly 60 years later, I wanted to see if I could recreate that same dark, hypnotic energy using my own analog setup in 2025. This recreation was recorded on a TEAC 80-8 8-track reel-to-reel, mixed through an Allen & Heath MixWizard, and printed down to mono on a Revox A77. Every sound was played and recorded by hand: drums, sitar, bass, guitars, and tambourine, all to tape. I wasn’t trying to copy every note, just to capture the spirit of the original session: the warmth, the drive, and the imperfections that made 60s recordings so timeless. Gear used: TEAC 80-8 8-track reel-to-reel Revox A77 (mono mixdown) Allen & Heath MixWizard Korg Stage Echo Various dynamic and condenser microphones Homemade “sitar-mod” guitar About the original: Paint It Black was recorded by The Rolling Stones in 1966 with producer Andrew Loog Oldham and engineer Dave Hassinger. Brian Jones played sitar, Keith Richards handled rhythm and lead guitar, and Mick Jagger’s vocals were likely captured with a Neumann U67 or RCA ribbon microphone through RCA’s custom tube console and Fairchild compression. The Magnetic Machines is my new retro-style solo project, original songs recorded entirely on analog tape. My original 60s style single “Caught in a Daydream” is out now on.
