24 young pianists from 10 nations have qualified for the final round of the 1st International Schimmel Piano Competition from 17th to 19th September 2021 in Braunschweig after intensive pre-selection. 7 pianists convinced the jury and entered the final. On the last day of the competition, they performed again in a concert lasting almost 50 minutes. After three exciting days, the prize winner was decided: The 1st prize went to Raimu Satoh (Japan). A high level of pianistic ability was required for the freely selectable repertoire. However, the pieces to be played had to have a thematic connection and an attractive programme concept had to be created. Programme and concept of the second final round by Raimu Satoh at the prize winners' concert in the Lessingtheater Wolfenbüttel: 00:00 - The Preludes of the 1910s by three French composers - 00:23 Fauré 9 Préludes op.103 - No. 3 in G minor 04:11 Fauré 9 Préludes op.103 - No. 4 in F major 06:03 Maurice Ravel - Prélude 07:52 Debussy Préludes Premier Livre - V. Feux d´artifice "The prelude is a kind of character piece and an instrumental work with an opening or introductory character. Preludes have long been written by many important composers from all over the world. In France, for example, Charles Alkan, Gabriel Fauré, Claude Debussy, Erik Satie, Maurice Ravel and Olivier Messiaen also wrote preludes, and three important composers of these - Fauré, Ravel and Debussy - interestingly composed preludes during the same period, in the 1910s. They lived in a musically stormy time - that was the time when, for example, Richard Wagner strongly influenced many other composers with his music. Fauré, Ravel and Debussy were no exception. (Fauré used leitmotifs in his opera "Pénélope". Debussy went to Bayreuth twice to see "Meistersinger", "Parsifal" and "Tristan und Isolde" at the festival and was very enthusiastic. In contrast to the two, Ravel appreciated Wagner but also distanced himself from him). Shortly before they composed Preludes, there was also the Paris World's Fair (1889/1900), which had a great influence on their music. Through the World's Fair, they had the opportunity to hear music from all over the world... and so on. But even though they lived in the same country at the same time and were inspired by the similar things, their "preludes" (of course) sound very different and have quite different colours. I would be happy to show these "similarities" and "differences" with this programme."
