The National Chorus of Korea was established in 1973 as the country’s first professional choir, in order to encourage the professional and artistic aspects of choral singing in South Korea. In 2000, the NCK was reestablished as an independent arts organization under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. Since then, the chorus has served the community through various and diverse performances such as project concerts, guest appearances, official national events, as well as local and international tours. The National Chorus of Korea has introduced a wealth of significant choral repertoire to South Korea, such as St. Matthew Passion, St. John Passion, Carmina Burana, Elijah, and Messiah, along with other wide range of choral music extending from the Renaissance to the present. The chorus plays the leading role in the choral music scene in South Korea, constantly developing new Korean choral works that portray unique characteristics of Korean culture.
