It's a completely unscripted sandbox game where you build your ship exactly like you want with almost complete freedom. Every island in the game was hand-crafted by members of the community giving it unbelievable depth. In this early access game you can role play, you can PVP, you can explore, you can start a trading company or an alliance that wants to take over the world... You can do whatever you want.
