Will and Jody’s film is probably the closest to a wedding comedy film that I’ve ever made. Although there’s only one truly comedic sequence in this film, there’s an undercurrent of levity and whimsy that runs throughout. I think this actually helps the more emotional moments land more. As an editor, I find it’s much easier to get my audience to go where I want them to emotionally if they’re already engaged on some kind of emotional level. If you’re laughing you’re more likely to be caught off guard by a bid for a different kind of emotion than if you were at your baseline. Very often I’ll “set up” more romantic and emotional moments with some kind of levity or humor - I find the romantic moment lands better. I met Will and Jody only 3 weeks before their wedding, and I’m super grateful I got to be there to capture this. From Will’s taste in music (much like mine), to Jody being about the friendliest person you could hope to meet, his was an awesome wedding.
